Quality Management Best Practices

How to fill out a manufacturing Non-Conformance Report (NCR) form

An NCR form documents deviations from engineering drawings, purchase orders, or quality procedures. In manufacturing environments like CNC turning, 5-axis milling, and precision sheet metal fabrication, catching and logging defects immediately prevents expensive customer rejects.

Step 1: Record Objective Defect Measurements

State precisely what failed inspection. Avoid general statements like "part defective". Use specific dimensional or visual callouts (e.g. Feature 12 bore diameter 0.752" vs. 0.750" +0.001/-0.000" print tolerance).

Step 2: Immediate Containment & Hold Tag Application

Place an unmistakable, physical Hold Tag on the parts bin or pallet. Print TagRoom's high-contrast quarantine tag and attach it before the parts can move to the next work center.

Step 3: Assign Disposition with Engineering & Quality Sign-Off

Classify the material: Rework (can be brought back to print), Scrap (unusable), Use As-Is (concession granted by customer engineering), or Return to Vendor (supplier raw material flaw).
